This tutorial shows most efficient and quick way to model a head. should work great with any polymodeler. The proper edge flow is easy to achieve this way. For help with setting up the images, please see my video on that: www.youtube.com

what kind of program do you use ? modo, blender, ???
July 3rd, 2010 at 1:41 am
@danielkirk1 I found the way, thanks

@nave4pres2 I’ll try. Ok for blender, it is simply in view> Background image
For maya and 3ds: Make a plane, and put your image on it some how (sorry i use blender)
you should get it in a day or 2, good luck.

@dominostandard From what I know, pixar has sculptors make the character out of clay and then a digital modeler uses that as reference.

If you didn’t have the picture of a face, is this how Pixar creates characters?

I’ve been box modeling for a long time. This method is VERY precise and perfect for manipulating surfaces for animations. Do you have any advise on where to put poles?
July 3rd, 2010 at 4:37 am
out of all the faces you could find to use, you chose an old man!? why not some hot babe!
July 3rd, 2010 at 5:27 am

@riku45 Go to Edit, Duplicate Special options, under Geometry Type, click “Instance” instead of Copy. Then make the scale -1 on the X axis (or whichever axis is on the mirror). Hit Duplicate Special or Apply.
The “Instance” option makes it so that when you move on vertex, the other one in the mirror side will move in exactly the same way.

just a quick question. I want to model a head using subdivision. I have my basic head but I want to model in a way where when I move a vertex on the left side it will be mirrors on the right sight. How do you do this?

Wow this is exactly what I needed. Thank you for uploading this. I’ve only been messing with basic shapes and felt I had a fairly decent handle on it, but never learned these tools yet. I’ve been interested in creating people to use. Daz just doesn’t cut it; it feels like dress up.

@HaloWarlord117117 Maya all the way. Maya is the industry standard now.
